Exposing Works Online

I think Edu2.0 is a better tool for discussion forums compared to Facebook Groups because I find it more academic.
I really feel good about sharing intellectual and artistic output online because of four reasons. First is that I am able to expose my knowledge and creativity to many people. Some people don't want to expose their online outputs because they think nobody will read it but it's different in my case because honestly, I love exposing my works online and even though there will be few readers on a particular post, I don't care about it because what's important is that I am able to share to other people.  Second is that I learned that some employers nowadays, check their applicants' online reputation and I think if the employers will see my outputs online, it would help me to be accepted. Third is that it's good for the university because when people look at my works online and they knew that I'm from a particular university, I think they will say that in terms of using technology in exposing what I learned, our university is great. Fourth is that I think it's a good training for students to have a good reputation, online.
Interactive discussions can be conducive for learning because everyone is given the opportunity to share their own ideas. I do believe that students nowadays are using the the internet and I think it's a good venue for discussions. The time spent for discussions in classrooms are  not always enough and I think during the night or particular free times of the students and instructor, we can continue it online.
To ensure that the medium can be maximized, to prevent abuse, or to ensure that students are fairly graded based on the quality of their participation in discussions, there should be a certain norms and rubrics for grading.

Conflict and Resolution

We were given this blog assignment about Key Concepts of Coordinated Management of Meaning.

This is really a funny yet interesting conflict. When I was in 2nd year High School, there was a girl who transferred in our school. She looks alien from our country. I asked her "What's your name?" then she answered: "Pardon?" During that time, I don't even know what "pardon" means. I thought she was mad at me and I just smiled. Afterwards, I asked her name again and she already answered me. Even though I already knew her name and since I do not know what "pardon" means that time, I thought of "Bakit siya ganyan? Kabago-bago eh, ang yabang, hindi naman inaaway, nang-aaway." I did not ask her what is the meaning of "pardon." All the time then until I reached the half of sophomore year, I did not know the meaning of that word.

I think in my analysis of the conflict, it is sort of cultural pattern as the problem. It's because I did not even know the word and that the girl is raised by English speaking persons though I love English, I was not mindful of some words before.

In coordination, I think I could apply regulative rule. I basically respond well after she said "pardon" and controlled my temper.

After some time, I already told her the entire story before about the "pardon" thing and she laughed. I think we resolved the conflict because of not losing my temper and just being polite.

The mystery as far as I understand in my own experience is that when I did not express what is on my mind during the first time I asked the name of the new girl student which is revealed after some time.

That is how I understand Coordinated Management of Meaning.

Always Stay Thin

According to the group who presented Dramatism, it means understanding the social uses of language and how to encounter the social and symbolic world of a drama  the reasons why people do the things they do and there is this so called dramatistic pentad which I will apply to the picture above.

As far as I understand it, the advertisement is the act because it answers the question “what?” and just like in TV Commercials, the commercial is the act wherein it is taken during vintage period or long time ago. The one who is involved in the advertisement or the agent is the woman on the photo who is thin and the agency is that the woman tends to eat all of the food in front of her that shows the purpose of the product to make a person thin even though he/she is always eating a lot of food.

In contemporary contexts, I think this ad is not effective anymore because there are lots of new slimming tools, surgeries and medicines to make a person thin. A friend told me that there is one way that you could eat as much as you can but you chew it thoroughly to digest easily.

CALAMBA AND SANTA ROSA: DIFFERENCES AND SIMILARITIES

Calamba and Sta. Rosa are both located in Laguna. They have similarities and differences when it comes to freshness of air, shopping malls, night life, and tourist attractions.

The freshness of air is clearly better in Santa Rosa. Calamba is more populated than Santa Rosa. According to research, as of 2007, 360,281 people are living in Calamba while 266,943 in Santa Rosa. Calamba is more polluted than Santa Rosa because there are lots of vehicles in Calamba. Both Santa Rosa and Calamba have vehicles but it is more in Calamba.

Shopping malls are both found in Calamba and Sta. Rosa. They both have SM but the differences are the time when they were opened and their size. SM City Calamba opened 2011 while SM City Santa Rosa opened 2006. The one in Santa Rosa is bigger than the other one in Calamba. They both have Walter Mart but the difference is that the one in Calamba is larger than the one is Santa Rosa. They both have Paseo but the one in Calamba is smaller than the one in Santa Rosa. Paseo de Sta. Rosa have different shops for bags, clothes and foods while Paseo de Uno de Calamba just have few shops and restaurants. Santa Rosa have Robinsons while Calamba don’t have. Santa Rosa have Solenad 1 and 2 in Nuvali while Calamba don’t have. Both Solenads are good venues for recreation, relaxation, shopping and most especially for recreation.

Night Life is better in Santa Rosa than in Calamba. Bars, clubs and party places are more in Santa Rosa than Calamba.

Santa Rosa and Calamba are both known to have tourist attractions. Calamba have Jose Rizal Shrine, Calamba Rizal Park, Banga Pot of Calamba and St. John the Baptist church while Santa Rosa have Enchanted Kingdom and EK Biki World. They both celebrate festivals too. Sikhayan Festival, Santa Rosa Cityhood Day, Saint Rose of Lima Fiesta, Saint Lorenzo Ruiz Fiesta and Grand Wizardy Competition in Santa Rosa while in Calamba, Independece Day, Rizal Day, Feast of Saint John the Baptist, Town Foundation of Calamba and Rizal’s Death Anniversary.

Calamba and Santa Rosa are both beautiful places. They have both similarities and differences. If you’re into modern travelling, I suggest you go to Santa Rosa and if you’re into traditional travelling, try going at Calamba city.

When you go to both places, be sure to have someone with you because it would give more fun and excitement. Bring extra clothes and towels because some beautiful places of both cities are open and not covered. Don’t forget to have some pocket money so you good buy a remembrance from both cities. Camera is a sort of a must when travelling to capture the moments.

How would you get there? If you want to go directly to the “Bayan ng Calamba”, from Manila you would ride a van or a bus that stops in Crossing, Calamba City then you would ride a jeepney going to the “bayan.” The ride on the bus costs approximately Php 10.00-30.00 and approximately Php 40.00-60.00 for vans. The jeepney from Crossing to Calamba Bayan costs around Php 7.00-10.00. Basically, I’ve never commuted going to Sta. Rosa, I even went there once only so as far as I know, from Manila, you could ride a bus or van going to Balibago, Sta.Rosa then take a jeepney going to “Sta. Rosa Bayan.” It would costs you around Php 80.00 for the van and jeepney and around Php 50.00 for the bus and jeepney.

My personal advice is that, don’t visit those cities without a companion. The more, the merrier and you’ll surely have fun. It’s better to use or rent a van if you are many and it gives more conducive travelling experience.

FACE!

Based on my understanding of the concept of face on Stella Ting-Toomey, the face being talked about here is not the literal face but the entire self of a person. Face Negotiation is a guide or process on how people will react on a certain context or cultures.

I agree that different cultures have different strategies for conflict management because different countries have different cultures. Language is also a powerful tool in terms of conflict management which varies in different countries.

I think on the conflict-management styles we presented, in different contexts, I am   Dominating and Compromising.

Dominating. I'm being like this when I know that I am right even though someone insists that he/she is right. For example, me and my sister are watching a TV Show. I know the story of the show because I'm watching it since its first day and my sister did not. She tells me something that is not right about the story of the show, I'm telling her the real thing but she still insists but still, I stand on what I believe is true.

Compromising. I'm being like this when teachers and professors ask us group works. Even if I'm a leader or not, I'll give my idea and also take other's ideas. Example is when a meeting in our school publication, one editor asked me about what do we want to improve in our 2nd broadsheet so I told her my ideas then she explained her ideas too incorporated with mine and I accepted it.

I often use Preventive Facework. It means that protecting another person for he/she would not be hurt or disturbed. I always do this since High School up to now, when I ask a favor to a person, I ask first if he/she is busy then whether she says yes or no, I'll say I'm sorry but I need to ask you a simple favor.

That's how I understand the theory.

MAJOR ATTRACTIONS OF LAGUNA
by Ryel Christian M. Medina

Laguna is known for having attractive tourist spots. Many foreigners are going to Laguna because of its beauty. There are three classifications of tourist spots here in Laguna. Namely, Historical, Natural and Man-made.

Historical. From the name itself, history influenced a lot on historical tourist spots. According to my research, Historical refers to whatever existed in the past, whether regarded as important or not: a minor historical character. Historical also refers to anything concerned with history or the study of the past: a historical novel; historical discoveries. While these distinctions are useful, these words are often used interchangeably, as in historic times or historical times. In Laguna, the historical tourist spots are the Rizal Shrine in Calamba City, Alberto House in Biñan City, Homma-Yamashita Shrine in Los Baños, Japanese Garden in Cavinti, Underground Cemetery in Nagcarlan, The Battle of Mabitac Mural in Mabitac, Pila Town Plaza, Ancestral Homes and Pinagbayanan Crematorium in Pila, Baker Hall in UP Los Baños and Emilio Jacinto Shrine Burial Site in Santa Cruz.

Natural. According to my research, natural means present or produced in nature and not artificial. The natural major attractions in Laguna are the Pagsanjan Falls in Pagsanjan, Mount Makiling in Calamba and Los Baños Springs, Hidden Valley Springs in Calauan, Crocodile Lake in Los Baños, Eight Mountains in Nagcarlan, Seven Lakes in San Pablo, Dalitiwan River and Taytay Falls in Botocan,Majayjay, Natural Drinking Water Mayatba and Spill Way Resort in Famy and Buruwisan Falls in Siniloan.

Man-made. From the word itself, it is created by man and artificial. Laguna have man-made tourist spots such as the famous Enchanted Kingdom in Santa Rosa, Diocesan Shrine of San Antonio de Padua and Municipal Museum in Pila, Boy Scouts of the Philippines Camp and Pook ni Maria Makiling in Los Baños, Hot Springs, Private/Public Resorts and Plaza Calamba in Calamba, Woodcarvings and St. James the Apostle Church in Paete, St. Polycarap Church and Diocesan Shrine of San Vicente Ferrer in Cabuyao, St. Gregory Church in Majayjay, San Pedro de Alcantara Church in Pakil, Centro Pacita and Sto. Rosario Parish Church in San Pedro, Diocesan Shrine of Santo Sepulchre in Landayan, Our Lady of Candelaria in Mabitac, Splash Island, San Isidro Labrador Church and Biñan City Plaza in Biñan, St. Paul the First Hermit Cathedral in San Pablo and Immaculate Concepcion Parish Church in Santa Cruz.

I’ve never been in some places I’ve written above. I already went to Rizal Shrine in Calamba City, Baker Hall in Los Baños, Mount Makiling in Calamba and Los Baños Springs, Enchanted Kingdom in Santa Rosa, Hot Springs, Public/Private Resorts and Plaza Calamba in Calamba. If you have some time, try to visit the different tourist spots here in Laguna, you’ll surely not regret.

ME!

By: Ryel Christian M. Medina

We were tasked to explain how we understand the difference between the concept of "I" and "me" as used in the Symbolic Interaction theory and enumerate and differentiate the different "me"s [selves] that we manifest (through observation and how people react to us) in our different social circles and we need to explain what accounts for these differences in "selves".

Based on what I learned about Symbolic Interaction Theory, “I” is what we think of ourselves and “me” is what other people think of us or what they want us to be (ex. They think I’ll be better if I will not wear a cap then I’ll be doing it).

I have different “me”s. When it comes to my family, friends, neighbors and strangers.

Family. Our family is very close to each other. When I’m with them, I’m quiet depending on the situation like when our family seems to be bored and none of us wants to go out. I’m not into sharing private stories about my life to them because I think I should keep it with myself and they respect it. I’m also doing what my family asks me to do (ex.get water for them, clean my room, water the plants). My family members say that I am doing the right thing.

Friends. When I was Elementary, I look untidy and naughty with my friends. I sweat a lot which makes my friends say that “Kadiri naman yang pawis mo eh”, which makes me think of improving myself by always bringing a towel with me. When I entered High School, I was different, I met new friends which always believe in my capabilities, they see me as an intelligent and studious student and I wanted to give justice for that, I wanted to be what they said, so I become responsible with school works. During 1st year and 2nd year, I was really fat and one friend told me “gwapo ka naman eh, papayat ka lang, mas magandang tignan, mas bagay sayo,” so I tried to lose weight during summer so when I entered 3rd year, my friends told me that I losed weight and it increased my confidence in communicating with other people. During the same year, one classmate noticed that I always wear simple clothes and loose pants so she told me that “bumili ka kayang skinny jeans, bagay yun sayo promise” so I asked my parents to buy me a pair and YES!I looked better. There was a party then, the one who told me to wear skinny jeans saw me wearing my new pair of pants and she said “sabi ko sayo eh, mas bagay.” Now that I’m in college, I’m confident of my body, fashion and communication with others which my friends notices and appreciates.

Neighbors. Usually, we have lots of neighbor whether in our old house in Alabang or here in Laguna. When we were in Alabang, I always go out and play with my friends. Im always naughty and playful. I was 8 years old then. We tranferred in Laguna when I was 9 years old and it was easy for me to cope with other children, we always do biking and playing around the village but when I already entered 13 years old, my mom told me “Huwag ka na labas ng labas at nakikipaglaro sa mga bata, ang laki laki mo na eh” so I followed her. Since then up to now, I don’t have many friends in our village, I just cooperate when someone invites me to a party, event and seminars. There are times when I go out just to buy something from a store, some people tells me “Ang suplado mo naman” but the real thing is not.

Strangers. I usually meet strangers all around especially when I’m commuting. I don’t talk to strangers unless they talk to me.

That is how I understand the “I” and “Me” in Symbolic Interaction Theory.
